3 WAYS TO BE AN LGBTQ+ ALLY
We are in the month of the year when brands adorn their shop windows with rainbow plastered decorations and products to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. Amidst all the celebrations, it is vital to be cognisant of why we celebrate Pride Month and how you can personally join the movement in promoting equality, acceptance and inclusivity for the LGBTQ+ community.
30 Years after the Stonewall Riots that broke out on the 28th of June 1969 in Greenwich Village New York City, President Bill Clinton declared June the ‘Gay and Lesbian Pride Month’ in 1999. This was introduced to be a month-long celebration and highlight of the LGBTQ+ movement, the human rights issues people of the community face, and the fight for fairer representation and mainstream acceptance of sexual diversity.
Here is how you can actively support the LGBTQ+ beyond rainbow social media posts and attending Pride events.
1. EDUCATE YOURSELF AND PUT IT INTO PRACTICE:
Get to reading. Being knowledgeable on the different terminologies that encompasses the LGBTQ+ community is a great first step. Understanding the gender pronouns, sexuality definitions is essential not to stereotype or misgender a person.
This article provides a comprehensive guide with definitions on gender, sexual identity and pronouns for beginners ⬇️
This knowledge when practiced will enable you to have a more welcoming and inclusive communication with people in the community.
Top tip*- Always introduce yourself with your preferred pronouns and ask the other person what pronouns they would like to be referred to as. This gets rid of the awkward correction, displays inclusivity and shows a sign of respect for their identity.
2. DONATE TO AN LGBTQ+ CHARITY ORGANISATION:
Ever heard of the phrase “put your money where your mouth is”? This statement has to be implemented literally.
Many charity organisations have been established to provide accessible health resources, legal and humanitarian support for the LGBTQ+ community in a society where they are profiled and discriminated against.
This year, for every purchase in our Pride Collection using code ‘LOVEFORALL’, vendi will be making a donation to MindOut; a charity organisation committed to providing mental health support and resources to the LGBTQ+ community.
These organisations rely on donations to continue providing these services. Your donation, no matter how little, matters!
Here is a list of UK organisations catering specifically to the LGBTQ+ community, so you can take your pick.
3. SPEAK UP
Support also means using your voice when someone is being bullied, profiled or discriminated against for their gender or sexual identity. From your friends, to strangers in the street, if you are a witness to someone making abusive remarks, using a slur or offensively stereotyping someone who is LGBTQ+, stand up for them and show them that they are not alone.
Here at vendi, we support and stand for the human rights of the LGBTQ+ community in loving, living and surviving freely in society without having their human rights violated. Happy Pride month and remember to Love with Pride all year long!! 🖤🤎❤️🧡💛💚💙
